Life without the net

I hate to admit it, but my life is so dependant on the internet. Whether it’s staying in touch with friends, family, supporters, finding directions, looking up weather or selling snakes. I need to be online almost all day! Things like following the latest FaceBook post, the trending tweets, and the coolest new videos it’s all part of the fix.
This morning my Internet modem was acting up and I couldn’t get online for an entire hour! That’s right 60 brutal minutes of not being connected. I hate to admit it, but I did have a sense of panic and also realized I felt lost. How was I going to know what the weather was going to be today, I could not possibly know how to dress myself without my weather update? What about what my favorite people on the net were posting this morning? There’s no way I could face the day without my daily dose of YouTube videos! What was I going to do???

The good news was within an hour of trouble shooting I am back online, back connected with the world! I think the bigger delima here is: has life gotten to the point where waking up and needed to be online is more important then life itself? I’m really not sure what the best answer to that question is. I think the the net and all the awesomeness that it brings, is supposed to enhance our daily lives and maybe not rule it as much as it seems to have become?

Of course I have been unconnected many times in the past couple of years, whether while traveling or just not around my smart phone, but being in my house where I have my normal routine of checking e-mails, FB, and twitter like a cup of morning coffee, and not being able to feel that sence of connection was troubling. In the end, I guess I’ll have to admit to my Internet addiction and maybe look for a twelve step program in the future, but then again, I’ll probably wait for another year or two. It’s not like I can’t stop if I wanted to, right????
